Echo Music is built on modern Android development practices, emphasizing clean architecture, modularity, and high performance.

Core Stack

• Kotlin: 100% written in Kotlin, utilizing Coroutines and Flow for asynchronous data streams and state management.
• UI Framework: Jetpack Compose (Material 3). We use a heavily customized dynamic color system that extends M3 with iOS-inspired glassmorphism effects via RenderEffect.
• Architecture: MVVM (Model-View-ViewModel) combined with Clean Architecture principles. State is managed via StateFlow and hoisted where appropriate.
• Dependency Injection: Hilt (Dagger) for robust, compile-time verified dependency injection across view models, repositories, and services.

Media & Playback

• Media3 (ExoPlayer): The playback engine is powered by AndroidX Media3, providing a robust MediaSessionService that deeply integrates with Android's system media controls, Android Auto, and background playback capabilities.
• InnerTubeX Engine: Handles complex media stream resolution, chunked caching, zero-latency read-ahead, and resilient playback bypassing BotGuard.
• Local Media Management: Built-in capability to parse and play local on-device .mp3, .flac, and .m4a files.

Persistence & Data

• Room Database: SQLite abstraction for caching songs, albums, artists, custom playlists, and offline lyrics locally.
• DataStore: Type-safe preference storage using Jetpack DataStore (Preferences and Proto) to handle user settings and UI state persistence.

Building from Source

1. Clone the Repository

2. Configure Android SDK Create a local.properties file:

   echo "sdk.dir=/path/to/your/android/sdk" > local.properties
   

   (For detailed paths on Windows/macOS/Linux, refer to SETUP.md)

3. Firebase Configuration (Optional) Firebase is required for analytics and crash reporting. See the instructions in SETUP.md for adding your google-services.json.

4. Build the Application Echo Music has two build variants: FOSS (without Google Play Services / Cast) and GMS (with Cast support).

   • To build the FOSS Universal Debug variant:

     ./gradlew assembleUniversalFossDebug
     

   • To build the GMS Universal Debug variant:

     ./gradlew assembleUniversalGmsDebug

Echo Music acts strictly as a specialized, third-party web browser and client. It simply parses the publicly available website content and APIs of YouTube and YouTube Music, rendering them in a custom user interface. The ad-free experience it provides is fundamentally no different from using a standard web browser (like Chrome, Firefox, or Brave) equipped with a common ad-blocking extension (such as uBlock Origin).

3. Support Content Creators

We deeply respect the hard work of artists, musicians, and content creators. We strongly encourage all users to subscribe to YouTube Premium. Purchasing a Premium subscription is the best way to financially support the creators you listen to and ensure the continued growth of the platform. We do not host, upload, distribute, or store any audio, video, or copyrighted media files on our own servers.
